Cottonwood is located on the northern most boundry of Bear Creek Ranch, adjacent to national forest land. Well maintained roads provide easy vehicle access. Clients avoid the typical day's walk (or ride) in. A remote area of the Gunnison National Forest will be your hunting ground, and is typically populated by elk, deer, bear, grouse, and varmint. Several water holes and extremely limited access make this a productive hunting area. Motorized access to the forest is available on this hunt. We recommend using horses when staying at Cottonwood.

Bunkhouses and Camping

This is a year round property. Parking, tent, and trailer camping are permitted in designated areas. The bunkhouses are available on a first-come, first-served basis. Reservations are required.

This newly hand-built cabin was made from logs cut and milled on the ranch. The cabin includes 4 sets of bunk beds, a complete propane powered kitchen, and propane lighting. The kitchen is stocked with pots and pans, shower and drinking water is not supplied. The cabin is heated by a wood-burning fireplace. A cleaning deposit is required.

Directions:

From the town of Somerset, go approximately one mile west on highway 133. Keep an eye out for a rail road trestle on the north side of the highway there will be a sign labled Boowie. Go under the trestle, and pass through the locked gate. From the highway, you will travel 6 miles down the gravel road to the main camp area. Follow the road signs for Cottonwood. Contact us (at 303.601.0888 or 720.314.0781) for the padlock combination. Be sure to call prior to leaving Carbondale as this location has no cell-phone service.

General Notes on Cottonwood Camp

• The bunk houses offer a great deal of comfort; be sure to bring clothes you can relax in.
• The general terrain varies from rolling scrub oak to Aspen groves to large draws surrounded by trees. Water holes all around the ranch and surrounding forest provide excellent wildlife viewing and hunting areas. As this is a very large area of land, you will need transportation (especially during hunting season.) We strongly suggest Jeeps, ATVs, or horses for greater mobility. We offer packing to get your animals back to camp. Please keep in mind that this is a working sheep and cattle ranch.
• We limit the number of hunters on this ranch to eight during all hunting seasons. Archery , Black Powder and Rifle seasons are all sold as five day hunts additional days may be arranged upon request.
• You will do your own cooking on this ranch. If we have different groups staying on the ranch at the same time, we request that hunters in camp work together on their meals. This allows everyone to eat at the same time, and makes use of the kitchen more efficient. It also allows for a rotation of cooking and cleaning duties. It's also a great way to meet other hunters and possibly make new friends.
• Corrals are in place and located adjacent to a good watering hole.
• Wood is split and stacked for guests' use.
• There is no running water at this camp.
• All Colorado lottery applications to hunt this ranch must be postmarked by the first Tuesday in April. The date varies, but the deadline always falls on the first Tuesday in April.

• The nearest town in which you can purchase supplies are either Carbondale or Paonia/Hotchkiss. Each is about an hour's drive from the ranch.
• There is no telephone on this ranch, which is also out of cell-phone range. There is a marine band radio in camp through which you can contact Bear Creek Ranch.
